We had the 1st meeting of VPA 198 Portfolios & Proposals on Friday. The course is not limited to, but many participants are interested in, submitting LEA Air LG Proposals for Round 9 (Linden Endowment for the Arts, Artist in Residence, Land Grant. The current round, which includes Medici University at LEA23 is “Round 8”)
The Air LG’s are for 20 Regions, LEA11 – LEA30. The period is for 5 or 6 months. They seem to get 40 or more proposals for the 20 slots. So your chances are very good, but definitely not a shoe in. Vanessa (Round 4) & Izzy (Round 8) have both received LGs in the past, but Trilby (Round 8) & Edie (Round 7) have both submitted great proposals in the past and not been selected.
FYI LEA is not “Linden Lab.” The lab donates the 30 LEA Regions (20 AiR LG regions and 10 others) but the LEA Committee is an independent group of SL Residents.
Guestimated timetable for Round 9
- Applications open around 1 May
- Applications close around 30 May
- Recipients announced around 15 June
- Start around 1 July
- End around 31 Dec
For Round 8 we put the “Pedestrian Access” project together. An umbrella of 4 projects, Izzy’s Medici University, plus 3 solo projects from Misprint Thursday, Gracie Kendal, and Trilby Minotaur. We got 3 of the 4, but did not get Trilby’s excellent Trilby’s Mill proposal. When the recipients were announced we connected with Lemonodo Oh to be our 4th member. (the 20 LEA AiR LG Regions are setup in 5 groups of 4 regions in 2×2 grids. All regions therefore have 2 borders facing ocean and 2 facing other LEA Artists. The Pedestrian Access idea was 4 regions without the harsh dividers that many artists use, like vertical terraforming or megaprim curtain walls. The LEA committee seemed slightly hostile to the Pedestrian Access umbrella idea. For Round 9 I’d suggest making all the proposals we might submit independent, and the whichever of them might be selected, we can ask at that point to be co-located at a 4-Region archipelago.

- Round 8 Application (Round 9 should be similar)
Regarding the Estate Management experience question: As far as I know, putting “None” doesn’t hurt your proposal at all. They’re just gathering info. If awarded a region, the LEA committee (or your VPA198 peers) can help with Estate Management.
Oona & Elle are interested in putting in an LEA AiR LG Round 9 proposal to “continue” Medici University. The proposal may include testimonials from current MU Learners and Flickr images. They might ask to be granted specifically LEA23 again, so that the same campus could be used without building it again from scratch. This is the so-called “MU Part II” proposal.
Neeva is considering putting together a “new” EDU proposal that might be something in the spirit of MU, but would be it’s own independent project not tied to MU. If we do submit 2 or more proposals, we have more chances to get something, and should we get more than one, we could ask to be neighbors for an even richer and deeper collaborative community experience.
Desu is interested in putting together a Surreal Landscape proposal.
Trilby is considering tweaking and resubmitting her Trilby’s Mill idea. But she’s a little apprehensive since they didn’t pick it for Round 8. We’d also like to encourage Edie to tweak and resubmit her Edie’s Farm idea for Round 9. Trilby also asked,
MU was such a good idea. Are there any statistics on the number of visitors, or anything like that?
Apparently LL collects, but does not make available traffic stats. There is no Traffic API. There are 2 places you can peek at traffic stats however, one is when you search for places, and one is when you look at About Land:
I don’t actually know what the traffic numbers mean!
Please leave a comment below if you do!
This page explains traffic sort of – but I’m having trouble deciphering it.
Here are the numbers for this morning, Saturday 18 April ’15:
- LEA 22 (Gracie Kendal) – 46
- LEA 23 (Medici University) – 4,609
- LEA 24 (Lemonodo Oh) – 546
- LEA 25 (Misprint Thursday) – 299
As you may know, MU is parceled into 4 equal parcels. Here’s how each contributes to our total region traffic of 4,609:
- MU-Isabella – 905
- MU-Dianora – 845
- MU-Bia – 1628
- MU-Eleonora – 1231
Muse didn’t say if she’s interested in working on a proposal. She was in information-gathering mode. She heartily supports Oona & Elle’s MU II proposal.
Fanny’s primary interest is in portfolios. Although Flickr is a useful site, she’s had a disappointingly large amount of trouble with it due to her nude content. Fanny’s work isn’t at all “adult” or “pornographic,” it’s simply “artistic nudes,” yet Flickr won’t show her work unless visitors login, and in some countries, won’t show it under any circumstances. Fanny likes Flickr because it’s so strong in the SL community, but the limitations seem too limiting. Other photo sharing sites, like Instagram, 500px, SmugMug, PhotoBucket, etc, all seem also like imperfect solutions.
I suggested a blog platform like WordPress or Tumblr, both of which have great “Photo Gallery” features and both of which will not block her content the way Flickr does. I also suggested that she buy the domain name FannyVermont.com and point it at WordPress or Tumblr or whatever she chooses. Note that you can have subdirectories or subdomains of your domain, so Fanny could, for example, point it to both WordPress and Tumblr if she wanted to. Or could move it to another website platform like Cargo, SquareSpace, etc, in the future if she wanted to.
I’m the cheerleader!
Fanny’s leaning toward WordPress.com (we went over the WP.com vs WP.org distinction) and FannyVermont.com, but wants to think her options over for a while.
Although Fanny’s the only person who really talked about Portfolios, I’d certainly everyone to think about them!
For the LEA Air LG Round 9 proposals we’ll probably have the month of May to write them. So we don’t have to put them up just yet. But since we do know what the submission form asks, and we do have ideas, we could post at any time. I’d like to encourage the peeps who participated yesterday, and any other MU Learners who are interested, to post their proposals, complete or rough, and solicit feedback from fellow learners!
You can post on your own site and add the link in the comments below. You’re also welcome to post here on VirtualPublicArt.com if you like. Just LMK and I’ll add you here as an author.
Best wishes, good luck, and shout if you have questions!
